Beatrice V. Pierce (1921-1993) sewed the quilt in the above photo. She made this and other quilts during her teen years while living in the Pierce Level area of Wilmer.
Quilters highly favored this traditional fan quilt block because it allowed them to play with color and pattern.

Yes, we have a quilter whose quilt, from Civil War days, was just donated to a SC archive. You are right, there are many possible stories and meanings in a quilt. Our relative sewed some imperfections in the quilt, deliberately, to make the point that only God could make a perfect creation.
